The late radio commentator Paul Harvey said, “Golf is a game in which you yell ‘fore,’ shoot six, and write down five.” There have been many jokes about the frustrations felt by scratch golfers and hackers alike, but it was (mostly) serious business at the first-ever Physicians’ Memorial Golf (PMG) Classic, held recently at Heathrow Country Club in Lake Mary.
More than 100 golfers gathered at the shotgun start to see who could best complete the beautiful Par 72 course. Team Haven Hospice, led by Jerry Burrough, Tom Blawn, Martin Favis, and Syed Hassan, MD, won the decision with a score of 58, after a three-way tie necessitated a scorecard playoff to decide the winners. Team Calderone, with DeBary dentist Joseph Calderone, son Tyler, Robert Collete, and Chuck Raragon, placed second. Team AHS was named third-place winners: Kerry Bower-Herr, Jackie Hamilton, Ted Hamilton, and Jeff Wood.
The PMG Classic would not have happened without the tireless efforts of our volunteers, including Kimberly Cline and LaVonne Volkmann; and without the generosity of EMPros of Volusia County, Adventist Health System, and Triad Isotopes.
We are especially grateful to the Robinson family: Rosemary Robinson, Debbie MacLean, Vickie Page, Lisa Burket, Melissa Robinson, Matthew Robinson, and Mindi Kaye Robinson, all of whom would golf, from time to time, with Dr. Robinson. The Robinsons graciously allowed us into their lives, and allowed us to name the PMG Classic after the late Jerry Robinson, M.D. Dr. Robinson, patriarch of the family and Deltona’s first physician, died in 2008. At the PMG Classic luncheon, Matthew Robinson shared with the group his father’s love of the links, and said, laughing, that he was “the world’s fastest golfer.”
All proceeds (after expenses) will benefit cancer patients in West Volusia. A preliminary accounting shows an expected net revenue of more than $27,000 for Florida Hospital Cancer Institute - Fish Memorial .
